Billy Bennett currently presides over the civil, criminal and juvenile docket in Division B.
Judge Bennett was born on June 16, 1955 in Marksville, Louisiana. He graduated from Louisiana State University in 1995 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. After college, Judge Bennett attended Loyola School of Law in New Orleans and obtained his Juris Doctor in 1979.
Before being elected as a District Court Judge in 1996, Judge Bennett was involved in a general practice of law with his father, B.C. Bennett, Jr. (Retired Judge); thereafter with his father and brother, John T. Bennett, and thereafter in a sole practice. Judge Bennett did serve as a Public Defender in Avoyelles Parish for three years.
Judge Bennett presides over the Avoyelles Parish Drug Court, which was instituted in April of 2007.
Judge Bennett is a member of the Louisiana District Judges Association, the Avoyelles Parish Bar Association, the Louisiana Third Circuit Judge’s Association, the Association of Drug Court Professionals, Juvenile Judge’s Association and the American Judge’s Association.
Judge Bennett serves on the Advisory Board of the Hope Center, a local Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facility.
Judge Bennett is married to Kimberly Hutchinson and has two step daughters, Hailey and Lacey. Judge Bennett has three grown children, Jamie, Joseph and Zachary.
